Unlike many psychic mediums, Cindy and I have not consciously interacted with Spirit all of our lives. When we were first presented with the concept of communicating with dead loved ones we were unsure how to approach the session. Do we speak directly to the psychic medium and ask them to communicate with our dead loved one? Do we speak directly to our dead loved one?
Based upon our personal experience, when we began giving readings Cindy developed the analogy of communicating with Spirit as being similar to language translation to explain what we do. I speak and read German, whereas Cindy does not. If she desires to communicate with someone who speaks German, she can either speak to that person by looking at them, speaking to them in English, and allowing me to translate into German, or she can look at me and ask me to, “Tell them….”
Working with a psychic medium is somewhat similar to foreign language translation. Cindy and I have been taught how to be psychic mediums and we have practiced communicating with Spirit. Therefore, we can understand Spirit’s “language”. We can take the words or images Spirit(s) provide to us and we can communicate—either by direct translation of the words provided in our head (e.g., Spirit is giving me the word ‘house’.) or by trying to interpret what the Spirit is communicating through their imagery (e.g., I see a dilapidated house with an overgrown yard and I feel immense sadness as the image is shown to me.).
The translator is not the important component of the equation.
The translator is a means to the goal of effective communication. The two people (our client and his/her dead loved one) trying to communicate with one another, unable to communicate in the same language, are still the two primary speakers. Therefore, like the example above, it is fine if you feel comfortable speaking directly to Spirit or speaking to us, asking us to translate on your behalf. The difference from my foreign language analogy is that Spirit can understand all of us—the thoughts we think and the words we express.
