Q: For What Title Should I Search?
I’m looking for someone who can help me speak to my dead loved one. I have searched the internet and have found people calling themselves psychics, mediums, clairvoyants, intuitives, spiritualists, channels, and spirit communicators. Do all of these people do the same type of work? Can any one of these people help me communicate with Spirit?
A: Two Types of Metaphysical Professionals
Searching for a professional who can communicate with your dead loved one can be confusing. What you need to know is that there are basically two types of professionals in the metaphysical realm—1) People who communicate with Spirit, and 2) People who do NOT communicate with Spirit. “Spirit” is defined myriad ways. We define Spirit as any entity not on our earthly plane (e.g., people who have passed, angels, spirit guides).
Medium
The most generic, well-known term for a professional who communicates with the dead is “medium”. You may also find other titles such as spiritualist, channel, and spirit communicator to define the practice of someone who communicates with Spirit.
Psychic
The most generic, well-known term for a professional who connects with your energetic aura to read information about you is “psychic”. You may also find other titles such as clairvoyant and intuitive to describe this practice.
Psychic Medium
Sometimes a professional will only focus on providing predictions by tapping into your energetic aura (psychic) or only focus on communicating with Spirit (mediumship). One thing to remember is that all mediums are psychics but not all psychics are mediums.
Kent and I are both psychics and mediums. As psychics, we establish a connection with your energetic aura to provide personal information (e.g., personality, current concerns, recent activities) and answer your questions (e.g., finances, career, relationships). As mediums, we communicate with Spirit (e.g., people who have passed, angels, spirit guides) to translate messages and provide guidance in response to your questions. We generally blend our psychic and mediumistic abilities in our client readings.
Unclear Terminology
Unfortunately, sometimes titles are not used in a consistent manner to what I’ve outlined above. For example, a clairvoyant may in practice be a psychic medium as I have described above. As a result, after you have searched for a professional by title, it is important to review the associated website to understand the service(s) that the professional provides. If you are still unclear about the offered services after reading the website, you may want to contact the individual via telephone or e-mail to get clarity before scheduling a reading.
