What are “the Clairs”?
If you choose to develop psychically or you work with a psychic or medium, you’ll probably read or hear reference made to “the Clairs”. For dictionary / dictionary-like definitions, please read this previous post.
In today’s post, I explain in layperson’s terms how the Clairs are used to receive information psychically and also share how each method of psychic communication manifests for me personally.
Clair = Clear
The term “clair” has a French origin, translating to “clear” in English. Which, when used psychically, is incredibly ironic, because psychic information tends to be subtle, and often-times is anything but clear.
The most common and well known of the psychic clairs is clairvoyant. Building on the translation of “clair”, clairvoyant is translated from clair (clear (adj.)) + voyant “seeing,” present participle of voir, from Latin videre “to see” to literally mean “clear seeing” or “clear sighted”.
Clairvoyant originally was ascribed to someone who had great insight, typically a particularly astute doctor, but instead of a positive connotation, the term typically was used to infer “quackery”. In the mid-1800s, the term became synonymous with a person who had psychic gifts or the ability to see beyond the physical.
Psychic Medium Communication Types
Once you understand that “clair” literally means “clear”, it is easy to translate all of the related terms into easily understood psychic abilities. There are six clairs that can be attributed to one’s “sixth sense”.
- Clairalience (clear smelling)—Smelling scent (e.g., perfume, cigarette smoke)
- Clairaudience (clear hearing)—Hearing words, phrases, and songs!
- Claircognizance (clear knowing)—Psychic knowing or direct thoughts
- Clairgustance (clear tasting)—Tasting a substance psychically
- Clairsentience (clear feeling)—Bodily feelings and sensations
- Clairvoyance (clear seeing)—Receiving images and visions, typically in your third-eye
Kent and I use “the Clairs” to receive information from a client’s energetic aura and to communicate with Spirit.
Personal Experience with The Clairs
In my personal experience, I have received information psychically using all of the Clairs except clairgustance.
Following are common examples of how I receive information psychically with each of the Clairs.
Clairalience
The most common way I receive psychic smell is for smokers—both as sitters and loved ones in spirit. I generally receive the same psychic smell regardless of what type of tobacco-like product is / was used. Tobacco-like products might include nicotine cigarettes, cloves, marijuana, pipe tobacco, cigars, and even smokeless tobacco.
Clairaudience
The most common way both Kent and I receive information using psychic hearing is in the form of songs. Since we’re musicians, we listen to a lot of music. Kent is generally better at providing specific details about the song he hears, but I can usually sing enough of the song to help you identify the tune in my head. This is also a very common and easy way for your loved ones to communicate with you. Ask a question and then pay attention to what song you hear next. In my experience, the message can be presented in the title, lyrics, or even with the singer’s name. Sometimes it’s a general theme and sometimes it’s specific advice.
Claircognizance
The most common way I receive psychic knowledge is when I am conducting a psychic reading for a client (instead of a mediumship reading). I find that I just suddenly know something about the sitter.
Clairsentience
The most common way I receive psychic feelings about a sitter or a loved one in spirit is in relation to a health issue. A loved one may demonstrate in my body the sensations that were felt, so I can understand an illness. As I prepare for a session with you, I may start experiencing pain or discomfort in my body that relates to an issue in your body. I specifically chose not to focus on work as a medical intuitive, I am not a doctor, and I do not diagnose. However, sensations that I feel in my body, may help you to discern areas of concern so you can seek proper medical care.
Clairsentience is the most physically draining for me because for some period of time I literally “feel your pain”. I do a lot of self-care (e.g., massage, acupuncture, eating properly, clearing my energetic aura, etc.) to keep myself in top physical condition so that I can discern between my own physical dis-eases and yours or the illness(es) of your loved one(s). However, clairsentience can still take a toll on me.
Clairvoyance
Clairvoyance is probably the psychic ability I use most frequently. I receive pictures, movies, scenes and other visual information for me to translate to the sitter. The information may be literal (e.g., “I see you fertilizing your lawn) or symbolic (e.g., “I see a fence around your heart.”) Even though I translate and explain the visual information I receive, further translation by the sitter is often required to fully understand the information received psychically.
The Clairs in My Work as a Psychic Medium
Although I have presented each of these Clairs as individual phenomena, in practice, I am generally receiving at least two pieces of information at any given time during a reading. Sometimes the information is related (e.g., I both smell smoke and have clear psychic knowledge the sitter is a smoker) but sometimes, I may receive two or more pieces of psychic information concurrently about different topics, and sometimes from different spirits.
Receiving information psychically and communicating with Spirit is very enjoyable for me, but it can also be quite exhausting. Sometimes the information I receive psychically is easy to translate but other times it is a lot like playing “Spiritual Charades”. That is why the sitter’s engagement is so important. Without proper translation (from the medium and/or the sitter), a message can literally “get lost in translation”. However, if the sitter actively engages in the psychic medium reading by communicating with the medium as to whether or not the information is understood, the information received generally becomes more clear.
