Do you feel you have free will and complete control over your life or do you feel that the life you are leading is predestined? Obviously that is a very personal question and I encourage you to determine your own truth. In this post, I’ll present my perspective.
There are a lot of theories regarding how much of our lives align with fate and how much of our lives are completely within our control.
I tend to believe there is a general outline for my life, but I don’t believe that every event is destined to occur, nor do I believe that my life is planned down to the minute and I’m basically just playing a role.
There are a number of ways that predestination is presented in our lives. The most common in my experience are:
- God’s Will
- Akashic Records
- Soul / Spiritual Contracts
“God’s Will” is a phrase that tends to make me uncomfortable. Although I feel that God has a will in my life, I don’t blame Him or credit Him for every decision I make or circumstance that occurs. Conversely, unlike God, I don’t feel satan has ANY role in my life. I don’t feel tempted or controlled by some external “dark” entity.
I’ve read and have been taught that the Akashic records are much like a reference library. I don’t feel that my life is planned down to the minute in the Akashic records and I don’t feel that an external “light” entity (e.g., spirit guide) is guiding every single step I take. I DO feel there is a general outline that my soul planned for this life, and I DO feel that I have a whole spiritual team that loves me and is available to provide me with guidance, but how my incarnated self chooses to carry out those general concepts is up to me, because I have free will.
A friend of mine, who does work with past lives and in between lives shared with me a different perspective on the Akashic records. She shared that it is more like ongoing historical record keeping. My friend shared that the Akashic records are what is written down after incarnations, like a report of our mission.
I feel soul contracts are similar to Akashic records in that they are a general outline of what my soul and another soul desire to accomplish together when we’re incarnated together. However, the actual “how” and “why” are up to the incarnated souls to determine.
Outline Versus Script
Although I feel there is a general plan for each of us—whether you want to call that “soul contracts”, “God’s will”, “Akashic records” or whatever—I don’t believe that we’re puppets acting out a play.
What’s the point in that?
I feel much of the reason people want to rely on some aspect of predestination, especially when something bad happens in their life, is to comfort themselves through a perceived lack of control (e.g., “It’s not my fault.”).
My perspective is that sometimes things DO happen for a reason. Sometimes there IS a lesson to be learned. However, sometimes, bad things (and good things!) are just part of life.
Sometimes when we are negatively impacted by the actions of another, it is because it is an opportunity for us to examine what part we’ve played in that relationship. But sometimes, people just aren’t very nice. Sometimes when someone harms us, the event has everything to do with the perpetrator and nothing to do with us. Sometimes when a stranger helps us for no apparent reason, there may be a lesson to be learned or we may just be the recipient of a random act of kindness.
Some events have nothing to do with God’s Will, the Akashic records, or soul contracts….and some events have everything to do with predestination.
I feel the general outline for my life is documented, but I’m fully in charge (free will!) of writing my life’s manuscript.
That’s what I believe. What are your thoughts?
