…then you can help others.
If you’ve ever flown on a commercial airline, you’ve heard some version of this directive regarding putting your own oxygen mask on before helping anyone else. This is apropos for many situations in our daily lives in addition to airline travel.
Sometimes we try to do it the other way around.
We start caring for the physical needs of an aging parent, small child, or sick loved one before taking care of our own physical needs.
Unfortunately, without caring for our own physical needs FIRST with proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and exercise, our physical bodies may break down. Unfortunately, if our physical bodies break down, we may not be able to continue to care for the needs of another person. Therefore, we really need to take care of our physical needs FIRST, and THEN help someone else.
…just a gentle reminder for those who have a tendency to put the needs of everyone else first.
It’s not selfish to take good care of yourself first.
It’s necessary.
